Actually Slam Dunk reminds me of Rokudenashi Blues, that is also from Morita (he did Rokuburu in 1988), so Rookies is in other words just his own style as it always been, so there's no way it could be a simple cloner of Slam Dunk.
The manga was fine and enjoyable as much as Slam dunk but the author dragged down the story by telling us the background of some team (he one just before the final) and hell that was boring to read that for about 3 or 4 volumes, it kinda broke the momentum of each cool actions made by the heroes -_-"
I do love the team and how they act together but the teacher, Kawato doesn't need to go "preach" on almost every ennemies that his team is facing. So serving him right, because of that his team will be in a crisis in the final...

Yeah i can see where you find the similarities between them but I think this is more like GTO if you don't compare the sports and just the straight up plot line from the teachers POV. But hey they are all beastly manga that everyone should read.
Hmm...yeah, I suppose you can compare it to GTO, but only on the surface. GTO poked fun of itself more than Rookies. I didn't like Slam Dunk...in fact, I can't get into any basketball manga. Its probably just me, but I find basketball manga the worst of all sports manga. Even though I like basketball in real life, basketball manga just seems inadequate or too obviously contrived. Baseball manga seems to be the best of all the sports manga, even though I hate baseball in real life...go figure.
yeah i totally get a slam dunk vibe too
i've actually read a few basketball mangas. slam dunk was my first one, and it blew me away. in fact, it's one of my top 3. i've looked through a lot of basketball mangas because of this, and i say that i've gotta disagree with what you're saying. takehiko inoue, the author of slam dunk, also wrote two other great basketball mangas. buzzer beater, about futuristic basketball (this isnt really focused on the game though, not like slam dunk was) and Real, about wheelchair basketball. i found both of these were very powerful mangas.
I know 2 other basketball mangas; Ahiru no Sora and Kuroko no Basket/Basuketo. KnB is trash, took the same route as Eyeshield 21 took with football and Prince of Tennis with tennis. AhS is a lot more realistic, but not too compelling.
i havent read many (i dont think ANY, in fact) baseball mangas, so i hope youre right, that baseball mangas are really good![]()
yeh SLAM DUNK is awesome, friend of mine, typical Narutotard, loves shonen manga but wont give it a chance. =/ Such ignorance. Im sure everyone can love these two manga, ROokies has just the same feel, full of humor and emotion!
