Why is Shik-nam even here?

Like everyone else here i was drawn to the art. So I thought I would at least like the main guy. I keep expecting him to grow on me and be like this cooler person but he just comes across as an ass. Even when he shows those small sparks of integrity. He just feels like a jerk. I thought that he would be like one of those characters that evolve but he shows no development. Why does he study so hard? Is he number one in his class? Are his math skills so great that they become alchemy? Does he have an ultimate goal, like becoming an elite to afford cure his sister? Maybe it will unfurl itself in later chapters but I'm ten chapters in and hating the main character.

Mehhh, i don't like him all that much either but i'm into the story line and art so i shall continue and just HOPE his personality will sometime improve at least a bit.

Most Korean protagonists are douchebags throughout. Just look at Ma Gangryong (Veritas) and Kang Shin-Gi (Zippy Ziggy). They are devils of their series and yet somehow they remain likeable. Must be that Shik-Nam really has no redeemable value that makes him stick out. Maybe something happened for Shik-Nam to act like that way, like perhaps the death of his mother?

After reading the latest chapter so far, at least he was somewhat greatful that Yugrinna said "Thank you" for getting her out of the "hairy" situation (funny how he even blushed after thinking about it). He also mentions though that it's been a while since someone ever said "Thank you" to him so maybe there was some kind of history to his behavior.

Thats the same thing I thought about Shik-Nam while reading the story. He is not a bad character just unlikeable to me. Like what someone mentioned about the mains in manhwa being douches which is mostly true compared to their manga counterparts they usually come of as cool or at least entertaining (like in Veritas and Zippy Ziggy) Shik-Nam not so much. Still the story is interesting,the art is great, and most of the characters are likable. Who knows later in the story he might his character might develop into something better.

I don't think he was meant to be a main character, rather someone who is suppose to be the cause of the problems for the princess, but it will probably change as the manga progresses more and more.

For me at least, Shik-nam's a mixed bag. On one hand, he's a math prodigy, which already makes him cooler than 99% of shounen leads because most of them are good at nothing yet nevertheless protected by plot armor. His "assholeness" is actually quite funny because it's so inappropriate for a main character, yet it makes sense because he's a true nerd. On the other hand, he cares nothing for anyone other than himself and his sister. It would be nice if he showed his true feelings more often, but he seems to enjoy hiding his emotions behind his wall of doucebaggery.

I still like him because he is realistic rather than ideal. The thing I always hated about school manga was the characters cared nothing about their studies because they were too busy with their love interests or fighting random supernatural enemies; this completely contradicts the rigorous academic lifestyle in actual Korean/Chinese/Japanese schools. It more resembles American schooling than anything. Seriously, people who don't study or work hard yet get the girl in the end or save the world, whatever, they just don't exist. At least Shik-nam is true to the real world, which should be the case when he's attending a typical Korean school.

Based on the end of chapter 14 i think we will begin to see some developement in his personality at least i hope so. would also like to see some more of the romance that the tags say should be in the manga.

I dont know many people who would put a smile like that, like in the bonus chapter that has recently been put online
