Default Birdy seriously sucks at her job!

Is it just me or does Birdy seriously suck at her job as a federation inspector! I've only read up to chapter 35 but everything she has done has ended in failure... not one single thing she’s tried to accomplish was successful… and in that sense everything’s too predictable… as I read on I went from thinking ‘I wonder what’s going to happen’ to ‘I wonder how she’ll fail this time’… I hope this changes in the later chapters

She's doing well considering the major factors working against her, namely trying to balance protecting Tsutomu with her duties to the investigation. When she doesn't completely succeed, it's usually because of things that were out of her control. That creates tension and makes the story more interesting. For example, when she didn't capture Bacilous, it was because Kashu interfered. Besides, this is no simple case, and she has successfully gathered evidence.

What specifically do you see as a failure on her part? There are usually several variables to consider.

At any rate, she's doing a better job and taking more care than Kashu or Capella.

Since you have only read to chapter 35 I won't put any spoilers but I can say that you'll start seeing "successful missions" soon. Think of Birdy as more of a western style super hero than the usual manga protagonists. Does Batman ever really stop the Joker?

Batman does stop the Joker it's just the gotham police force isn't competent enough to keep his ass in prison.

Atleast Birdy tries to do her job like we expect our real police force to do it. Atleast she doesn't do it like the other feds (Not FBI! The ones in this manga... >:( )...

I have to agree with Necrokey, she's an idiot and people are dying because of her left and right. Sure the first thing with the protagonist might not have been entirely her fault. But everything that came afterwards sure as hell was. I especially liked the whole Botulous thing.
She tried to actually capture him so she wouldn't have to kill him. An parasite that devours and takes over people without hesitation. Sure "not killing" might be good under many circumstances, afterall killing should be the last resort. However in this case while trying to safe the life of Botulous a ruthless killer many, many, many other people died because of her and every last one of this deaths that occured after she had a chance to kill him was entirely her fault.
I especially liked this thing, after she was so angry about the protagonist refusing to work with them in the beginning, going on about how the blood of those millions of people would be on his hands. Completly ignoring that his own family was threatened and they couldn't have provided any kind of meaningful protection for them, not that they even considered doing so.
Yet her own consciences was more important than the life of all those people that got murdered by Botulous in her case. Honestly so far I really don't like Birdy at all.

Investigators are supposed to go after the leadership, not the small fry. Thats what the rank-and-file officers are for.

    Shes doing her job fine.

Personally, I think you're confusing "good at her job" with "makes no mistakes." Birdy is far from perfect, but she's decent at her job (not amazing, but she was apparently a combat specialist and was weakened by hosting Tsutomu, so she's not exactly at her best). She gets good information and generally protects a lot of people. She even manages to do so without killing anyone. Which is good, since she's a cop, not a judge/jury/executioner. It isn't her job to kill bad guys, because it isn't her job to decide who the bad guys are. It's her job to collect evidence, arrest suspects, and protect innocents from immediate harm.

Incidentally, the Batman metaphor is actually quite a good one. Why doesn't Batman just kill the Joker? Joker kills a lot of people, and Arkham clearly can't hold him. Killing Joker would save lives. But Batman won't kill, because that's not his place. Batman will stop the badguys, but he won't punish them. If he did, if Batman took justice wholly into his own hands, the only thing stopping him from becoming a far more dangerous villain than anyone in his rogue's gallery would be the continued good judgement of a man who suffers severe physical and mental trauma on a regular basis. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is not a bet you take with people's lives.
